When horrible things happen to good people

Today, our Spoon Room got hacked and all participants where exposed to horrifying images of child pornography. I don’t need to tell you how awful this was for everyone on the call.

As you can imagine, a few people disconnected in shock, just to protect themselves from what they were forced to see. However, 28 people stayed online and we used the community for its original purpose: to connect and support. And boy did we need it today.

Two insights emerged for me:

  1. Life can be brutal. As much as I would hope it wasn’t true, child abuse and pornography are a fact of life. To be involuntarily confronted with this version of reality made me realise just how safe the bubble in which I exist is and how many people (and children) are out there who need a helping hand and someone to talk to.
  2. Connection heals. When we started to connect in our small group, I felt sick to my stomach. All of us sat there dumbfounded for a few minutes, grappling to find words for the unspeakable. But we did stay and we did find words. After 25 minutes, the nervous systems of four strangers had co-regulated across a vast distance (we were in Germany, the UK and Spain). We left feeling calmer and more hopeful about humanity.

Now, more than ever, am I convinced of the healing power of human connection. Now, more than ever, am I convinced that we need offers like the Spoon Room and Camerados. We can’t and won’t allow that spaces for community, connection and care are destroyed by those who are angry and alone.

We are obviously talking to the police and our IT support is doing everything they can to safe-guard us against future attacks. But the truth is, to be human means to be unsafe. To be in connection means to risk getting hurt. To be open means to offer your vulnerable heart to the world.

Thank you for everyone who is part of Spoon Room. Let’s continue to be wonderful and light and kind to each other. If you need support, please send me a direct message and we’ll connect to talk.

We’ll see you next week, Camerado!
